My Dog Really Hates Me Because…

…The Day I Masked “Rex’s” Scent

Owner’s Perspective

Scent is everything to our dog, Rex. Some might even call him a connoisseur of smells. His sniffer can detect a week-old chicken bone buried yards away… and my hidden stash of mint chocolate. But, this particular skill, while impressive, came back to bite me.

As we spent another Saturday in quarantine, a thought occurred to me. If we can’t go to the park, why not bring the park to him? I grabbed Rex’s favorite shampoo, the one that smells of fresh-cut grass and sunshine. (The label even had a picture of a Golden Retriever running free in a meadow—quite convincing, don’t you know!)

Bath time was a success… or so I thought. The bathroom was relatively unscathed, Rex was floofier than ever, and the air had a pleasant hint of meadow freshness. As I revelled in my triumph, the unthinkable betrayal happened. Rex gave me one long, somber look, then turned around and retreated to his bed, leaving behind a trail of wet paw prints and my shattered heart.

What did I do wrong? Just wanted our boy to feel like he was romping in the park. But that look of his—a mix of disappointment and profound sadness—cut me deep. I had scrubbed away my dear dog’s identity along with the dirt.

Rex’s Perspective: The Smell Dilemma

Usually, bath time means war. I’ve perfected my puppy eyes, demonstrated my best limp noodle impersonation, and even tried hiding (didn’t really work). But TODAY was unlike any other.

She uttered the words every dog dreams of. “PARK BATH,” she announced. She even held up the fancy bottle — green, with a picture of a dog that smelt like FREEDOM.

So, I let her. I LET HER. I hopped right into the tub, wagging my tail. Bath time? More like frolicking in the park time, I thought! But then, it happened.

My human, the one I TRUSTED, lathered me with the shampoo. The scent of the park washed away, replacing my noble eau de doggie. And just like that, my identity, my essence, the unique olfactory signature that separated me from the squirrel next door… was gone.

A wave of confusion washed over me. WHO WAS I? I aired out my outrage — a pitiful whimper, a droopy tail, the all-powerful SILENT TREATMENT.

Paw-perfumed Redemption

My guilt hanging like a cloud, I realized I’d essentially forced Rex into a canine version of Witness Protection. This needed fixed. Yes, it was time for redemption.

My solution lay with The Hungry Puppy. They offered a solution, a veritable life-preserver in my sea of guilt — doggie perfumes. Fetching that non-aerosol spray bottle of “Country Dog” perfume, I headed home with the potion to restore Rex’s scent dignity.

The moment I sprayed that perfume, it was a game-changer. Rex, after a double take, sniffed eagerly. He noted the subtle notes of pine cone and squirrel, a trace of mud, and the rich, heady scent of dog park dirt. I saw his tail wag, his eyes sparkle. Sniffing his fur, he trotted around the room, head held high.

And then, it happened. He leaned in, sniffed my leg, gave me a lick, and curled up at my feet. His tail thumped gently on the floor. All was forgiven. And the house smelled like a cross between a forest and a dog park.

Crisis averted. Dog’s identity restored. Dog no longer hates me (until next bath, at least)
