Owner’s Perspective
I just thought it would be cute (and a little hilarious) to snap a few pictures of Max in an adorable puppy sweater featuring an all-too-jolly snowman. I mean, who doesn’t love a dog in holiday garb? So, there I was, coaxing him gently into the arms (sleeves) of the snowman sweater with promises of all his favorite treats.
Max cooperated at first. Tail wagging, curious sniffing and all. But as soon as the sweater was on, his mood shifted. No more happy tail wagging. No more playful Max. Just a resigned acceptance of his “festive” fate.
He looked up at me, the twinkling Christmas lights reflecting in his big puppy dog eyes… and then, those eyes shifted from playful to purely betrayed. The tail didn’t just stop wagging; it tucked itself in so tightly I thought he was trying to become a turtle. And then, he walked away, leaving me standing in a room full of holiday cheer wondering why my attempt to spread joy had been so woefully received.
Max’s Holiday Hijinks
I don’t usually mind the festive frills. The special holiday treats? Love them. The extra visitors bringing extra scratches and extra attention? Yes, please. But who among us expects to be stuffed into a scratchy snowman sweater during an otherwise NORMAL day? (And for the record, I look NOTHING like a snowman!)
So picture me, thrilled to be promised my favorite indulgences. Picture my tail wagging in anticipation, my innocent trust in those promises. Now, imagine my surprise when I realize the “treat” is… a SWEATER. A sweater so tight I could be a DOG-shaped SANTA CLAUS!
The disappointment hit me like a bag of unwrapped presents. My trust betrayed, my hopes done away with, all because of a misguided attempt at holiday spirit. And so, I did what any reasonable dog would do in that situation. I walked away. I WALKED AWAY and retired to my bed, away from the ridiculous snowman. And when she approached, even with my favorite squeaky toy, I turned away. The SILENT TREATMENT had begun.
The Happy Ending
Was I being a Grinch? Maybe. But you know what they say about dogs and their dignity… it’s a tale as old as time.
Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore. Seeing Max sulking around, giving me the cold shoulder… it got to me. I knew the only place that could help us find Christmas peace was The Hungry Puppy. So, I took off the disgraceful snowman sweater, and instead, substituted the greatest gift of all – The Hungry Puppy’s premium bully sticks.
When Max saw the bully stick, his betrayal vanished. The tail wagging resumed, faster than Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve. One sniff of the bully stick and I was redeemed. That spark returned to his eyes, and he snuggled up to me, his furry body pressing against my side. It was like the event of the distasteful sweater had disappeared from his memory.
Crisis averted. Holiday spirits lifted. Dog no longer hates me (till the next unforgivable debacle).
