Owner’s Perspective
There it was, laying forgotten, right in the middle of our living room — Boomer’s favorite chew toy, the one we lovingly call Barky the Biscuit (don’t ask). Its absence from Boomer’s eager jaws was the first sign of trouble.
As any seasoned dog parent can tell you, this scenario spells disaster capital D. You see, Boomer and Barky are, to put it mildly, inseparable. Barky accompanies Boomer on walks, to mealtimes, even to bed (yes, I’ve found Barky casually tossed on my pillow more times than I care to admit).
This morning, however, in the dizzying bustle of getting the kids ready for school and prepping for an early Zoom meeting, I’d moved Barky to the bookshelf — to clean, I swear, nothing sinister (He’d had a run-in with a strawberry jam toast).
Boomer’s first reaction? He sat in his favorite spot, near the fireplace, and offered the most pitiful yip. He stared longingly at the bookshelf, then at me, then back, his fluffy tail as still as a windless flag.
That’s when the guilt swamped me. It wasn’t just the yip, it was those eyes. The “you’ve taken away my favorite thing in the world” eyes. The “I’ve never felt a betrayal this deep” eyes (someone please award this dog an Oscar).
Boomer Barks Back
It was a normal day — a GREAT day. Barky and I had big plans. The usual rounds of fetch, some tug of war, perhaps a gentle gnawing session by the window.
Then, SHE took Barky.
Yes, my human. MY HUMAN took Barky and placed him ON THE BOOKSHELF. Does she not see I am vertically challenged? Does she not understand that Barky and I are a team, a pair, a duo that rivals Batman and Robin?
The audacity. The absolute AUDACITY.
I waited. I silently protested. Honestly, I was expecting an apology, some recognition of the monumental error. I even gave her the look — the “I am a dog, deprived of his co-pilot” eyes. But ALAS.
Hours passed. I yipped once, gently. Nothing.
My heart was BREAKING. The floor felt colder without Barky on my paws. I lay there in the ensuing silence, my joy stolen, my spirit crushed.
Crisis Averted
I couldn’t bear it anymore. I couldn’t face those eyes. I yanked Barky down from his torture chamber atop the bookshelf and apologized with my eyes. But it was clear, an empty-handed apology wouldn’t suffice.
I grabbed my car keys, looked at Boomer, and silently promised redemption.
Almost instinctively, my feet led me to The Hungry Puppy. I felt a magnetic pull towards the chew toys section. Barky needed a comrade for Boomer — a companion to weather the storms of the breakfast bustles and impromptu cleanings.
Enter Chewbacca the Chewstick — a sturdy, boomerang-shaped chew toy from The Hungry Puppy’s trusted stash. The moment it caught my eyes, I felt it — this was Boomer’s new sidekick; this was Barky’s new brother in arms.
Back home, the transformation was instantaneous. Boomer was on his feet the second I walked in, his tail wagging like a windmill in overdrive. His eyes lit up at the sight of Chewbacca, and he leapt at it with an enthused yip, nuzzling it alongside Barky.
Joy was restored, rooms echoed with Boomer’s excited barks, and peace descended once again. My guilt, previously as relentless as a summer heatwave, cooled down under the shade of Boomer’s forgiveness.
Crisis averted. Toy justice served. Dog no longer hates me (till the next mishap).
