I am a parent of many stuffed animals; some are large, some are hairy, and some have a tough-guy exterior. But the darling of our collection (and Buster’s favorite) was a little hedgehog with a squeaker — a gentle creature of frequent squeaks, now silenced. Honestly, the regular “squeak-squeak-squeak’ was background noise at this point (and I swear, part of my dreams). But one fateful afternoon, things were unusually quiet. As I peeked from my office, Buster sadly presented the hedgehog now devoid of its voice — the squeaker had given out.

You think, “Ok, no big deal. It’s just a squeaky toy, we’ll get another one.” (Like they have a squeaky-toy aisle in the grocery store next to the bakery). But the look of expectation in Buster’s eyes suggested otherwise. The squeaker-gone-quiet toys’ silence in our house was deafening, and it stung more than the loss of background noise. Crisis averted. The symphony of squeaky joy restored. Dog no longer hates me. (And hedgehog has a backup choir on standby).
