Owner’s Perspective
Look, we all get hiccups. It’s a small, temporary annoyance. You drink some water, maybe get startled by something, and they’re gone. Hiccups are inconvenient, sure, but they’re not the end of the world. I tried to explain this to Daisy when she got hiccups for the first time. I’ve seen that look of confusion on a kid’s face, but seeing a Labrador Retriever perplexed by hiccups is something else entirely.
Trying to explain hiccups to a dog…now that’s a unique experience. “Daisy, hon, you’ve got hiccups,” I told her, patting her back while making shushing noises, “(do not judge me…it works on babies!).”
You haven’t seen confusion until you’ve watched a pup stop dead in her tracks because her body is making weird noises. Those big brown eyes went wide every time she hiccuped, and her ears dropped slightly. It was a mix of surprise, confusion, and a bit of panic. Despite my attempts to soothe her, the hiccups wouldn’t stop. Now, don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t laughing… okay, maybe just a little, but purely out of love!
Daisy’s Side of the Story
Everything was PERFECT. I was in the middle of my afternoon playtime and right on the third toss of my favorite squeaky toy, IT happened. A strange sound came from inside me. It was like nothing I felt before. It was STARTLING, UNEXPECTED, and most definitely UNWANTED.
I tried to ignore it, thinking it might just go away. But then it happened AGAIN. And AGAIN. Every time I was about to catch my toy, the strange sound interrupted my focus. I stopped playing, LOOKED at my human with pleading eyes, and barked once like saying, “WHY IS MY BODY BETRAYING ME?”
My beloved human saw my confusion. She held me, patted me, and uttered soothing words, but the strange sound kept happening. I was CONFUSED. I was FRUSTRATED! Was this going to be a PERMANENT thing now? Oh, the INJUSTICE!
The Happy Ending
I couldn’t bear it anymore. Daisy looked more worried with each bout of hiccups, and I had to do something. Despite my reassurances, it was clear that she was not going to stop worrying until the hiccups did. “Alright, Daisy,” I said, grabbing my keys and Leash, “Let’s go to The Hungry Puppy and get you a hiccup-relief treat.”
I went straight to the Wellness aisle and picked up a bag of Primal Freeze-Dried Treats, known for their calming properties. An all-natural snack might help her calm down and perhaps even fix the hiccups. Hey, it was worth a shot, right?
The moment Daisy saw the treat in my hand, her apprehensive expression vanished. The hiccups seemed to magically disappear as soon as she took her first bite of the Primal treat. She blissfully gnawed at the treat, the previous hiccup-induced panic forgotten.
Crisis averted. Hiccup-induced panic settled. Dog no longer hates me (and I now know how to fix doggy hiccups immediately).
