Owner’s Perspective
I never imagined such an innocuous act would lead to such intense scrutiny from my most loyal companion, Roxy. It started as a regular evening — Netflix, some late-night snacks, and a relaxing night in. Then I noticed her.
Roxy. My affectionate, tail-wagging, tennis-ball-chasing beagle, with a sparkle in her eye that screamed “I need a good brush.” It had been a dusty day at the dog park, and few baths ever got out all the dirt she brought back with her. Besides, wasn’t a pet’s grooming part of any decent owner’s responsibilities? That’s what I told myself, that’s what the pet guides online said, and that’s what I’d reassure my credit card as I stocked up on the latest grooming supplies.
So, I did what any responsible owner would. I grabbed the new brush. I sat down, patted my lap, and beckoned to Roxy. No morning fetch. No treat hunt. Just a regular, harmless brushing session.
Her eyes widened, her tail tucked between her legs, and she backed into a corner. I sighed. I should’ve seen it coming, really — it was the first time I was using the new brush, after all. But I couldn’t understand the reason behind her exaggerated fear of grooming.
Roxy’s Reactions
HERE WE GO AGAIN. I saw it in her eyes. I saw it in the way she looked at me after dinner. She was up to something.
And then, there it was. THE BRUSH. Not the familiar one, mind you. Not the one that gently detangled my fur and felt like a soft massage. NO. This one was new. It had tougher bristles and a longer handle. AND IT LOOKED SUSPICIOUSLY EFFICIENT.
I don’t think she understood. MY FUR. MY BEAUTIFUL, Elite Commander of Dirt Collections, dignified beagle fur, was NOT up for negotiation. And yet, there she was, waiving that brush around like she meant loving business.
And so, I did what any self-respecting, startled, and highly dramatic beagle would do in the face of such betrayal. I whimpered. I took a few steps back. THEN I RAN FOR MY BED. She couldn’t reach me there. That was my sanctuary. MY ONLY SAFE SPACE.
The Happy Ending
The sight of my charismatic beagle cowered in her bed, betrayed eyes never straying from the new enemy (aka the brush), was too much.
“Heck,” I whispered, setting the new brush aside. “Heck.”
Minutes later, I rushed out of the door, into my car, and went off towards the one place I knew could fix my predicament. My destination: The Hungry Puppy.
With the help of a friendly staff member, I found the perfect solution: a KONG ZoomGroom! It looked more like a toy than a grooming tool, with its rubber bristles perfectly suited for Roxy’s sensitive skin. It even promised a ‘magnet-like’ attraction to loose fur. I had a winner.
Back home, I presented it to Roxy like the grand apology it was. Skeptic at first, she sniffed it. Then, she let me brush her with it. Gradually, her tail started wagging, her ears perked up, and the sparkle returned to her eyes.
Crisis averted. One brushing drama brushed aside. Dog no longer hates me (unless I bring home another new brush).
