My Dog Really Hates Me Because…

…The Day I Ran Out of Peanut Butter

Owner’s Perspective
It all started on a perfectly normal Sunday. I was making toast for breakfast (I swear, just for me), when I looked over my shoulder and saw Daisy. There she was, with those pleading eyes. The ‘I know there’s peanut butter involved and I want in on it’ eyes. So, yes, I caved. I gave her a dab of peanut butter on her usual kibble. She gobbled it down and seemed pleased, tail wagging and all.

You have to understand, my Daisy has a love affair with peanut butter that rivals Romeo and Juliet’s romance. The mere sound of the jar lid opening sends her into a frenzy. It makes her breakfast a little more exciting, and in return, I become her favorite human for about fifteen minutes—a win-win.

Fast forward to Tuesday. I reached for the peanut butter jar, intent on repeating the scene from the weekend. Only, there was no spoonful to be found. I scraped. I shook. Nothing. The peanut butter jar was empty.

Spotting my difficulty (or perhaps my silent, guilty confession), Daisy tilted her head to one side, ears at full alert. When no peanut butter arrived, her ears drooped, and the hopeful wagging of her tail ceased. She looked up at me with an expression that would’ve made even the sternest of hearts crumble. As she shuffled away to eat her ordinary, un-peanut-buttered breakfast, I knew I’d made a grave error in underestimating the power of pantry essentials.

Daisy’s Diary

Oh, the travesty. The absolute injustice. Do you know what happened this fateful Tuesday morning? I woke up, tail wagging, RUNNING to my food bowl because I KNEW. I knew there would be PEANUT BUTTER.

Like I have every morning since Sunday, I waited patiently by my bowl, tail in suspenseful mid-wag. My human opened THAT cupboard – the one with MY JAR. Now, get this. SHE OPENED THE JAR AND INSIDE, THERE WAS NOTHING.

Just despair. That’s what’s left when the crunchy goodness of peanut butter is gutted from your life. She gave me this apologetic look. Sorry? SORRY? A sorry won’t satiate my tastebuds, human!

I walked away in slow, hurt steps. I could hear my stomach protesting, my tail sagging, and oh, the silence that echoed through the kitchen was deafening.

The Happy Ending

My guilt reached its peak when I saw Daisy slumped on her bed, her disappointed gaze burning holes into my own peanut butter-less toast. I couldn’t do this to her. Not when The Hungry Puppy was just a phone call away.

I dialed their number, fingers flying over the keypad with urgency. After a quick consultation regarding Daisy’s love for peanut butter, I was recommended Kong Easy Treat—Peanut Butter. They said it was irresistible, perfect for filling up toys or just as a treat to make her kibble exciting again.

When the delivery arrived, Daisy barely looked up, her tail uncharacteristically still. But the moment I popped open the Kong Easy Treat and the familiar fragrance wafted through the air, it was as if Daisy had been jolted back to life. Her tail wagged, her ears perked up, and she sprinted toward her bowl faster than a greyhound after a hare.

As I swirled the peanut butter treat onto her kibble, Daisy’s tail nearly cleared the coffee table of its ornaments. Seen without more than a blur, it was hard to tell if it was a tail or a wind turbine at work. The first taste had her eyes closing in delight, her tail unabashedly sweeping the floor.

Crisis averted. Pantries re-stocked. Dog no longer hates me (and I’ve sworn to never underestimate the power of peanut butter).
