The Owner’s Side
I’ve always been an advocate of a balanced diet. For myself and for Duke, my ever-loyal basset hound. I thought introducing him to the benefits of vegetables would be an achievement. A step towards ensuring his wellness. But, boy, was I wrong!
It started innocently enough. I, cooking up a storm in the kitchen, while Duke patiently waited by my side, his tail thumping rhythmically against the tiles. And then, in a moment of total culinary inspiration (or maybe it was madness), I threw a piece of broccoli into Duke’s bowl. “Healthy,” I declared, “and great for digestion!” (Was it just me, or did he give me an unimpressed side-eye?)
The initial reaction was all the encouragement I needed. A sniff here, a sniff there, and then tentative licking. I watched cheerfully, admittedly feeling a little smug, until Duke paused. He looked up at me with the most betrayed gaze, his long ears dangling, and the piece of green monstrosity falling from his mouth.
That night, I felt the weight of my sin. The way Duke retreated to his bed, his tail tucked in and ears droopy, was heartbreaking. Even the customary tummy rub wasn’t tempting enough. I had taken a walk on the wild side and betrayed his trust with a vegetable.
Duke’s Deep Disappointment
DUKE isn’t a fussy eater. Duke jumps at food. Well, he did…until the BROCCOLI INCIDENT. You see, I have a simple philosophy in life: If it isn’t meat or treats, it shouldn’t even be considered food. But today…today was different and not in a delightful surprise kind of way.
There I was, my tail thumping happily as the aroma of delicious food filled the room. IT WAS A GOOD DAY. But then, SHE did it. THAT, which can not be forgiven. The green, leafy, totally-not-treat landed in my bowl. I, trusting her completely, took a sniff, maybe it was some fancy treat. I was WRONG.
It took me a moment. The strange texture, the unappetizing taste. And then it hit me. BROCCOLI! The very symbol of betrayal. I could not believe it. Was it a joke? Was she laughing? MY TRUST, trampled by a VEGETABLE. SAD.
I took one last glance at my owner, my disappointment clear. I walked away, retreating to my bed. Today was not a good day. The world needed to know about my suffering. So here I am, deep in a sulky silence and exaggerated sighs of the wronged. The broccoli still a vivid nightmare.
Crisis Averted
I couldn’t take it any longer. The sulking. The deep, mournful sighs. And those eyes, like saucers full of sadness. It was time to make amends. So, with newfound determination, I placed an order at The Hungry Puppy. My weapon of choice? A pack of Stella & Chewy’s Dandy Lamb Dinner Patties. Freeze-dried, nutrient-rich, and most importantly, BROCCOLI FREE!
When the package arrived, Duke’s ears perked up. He was on his feet, tail wagging as he watched me open the package. The scent of the lamb treats filling the room seemed to lift his mood, and in front of the lamb patties, the dreaded broccoli incident seemed to fade from Duke’s memory.
As I watched Duke heartily enjoy his Stella & Chewy’s lamb patties, it felt like we had, once again, found our happy place. Those droopy ears perked up and the tail went back to its rhythmic wagging against the floor. Peace had been restored, the memory of the broccoli betrayal quickly fading away.
Crisis averted. Meaty peace restored. Dog no longer hates me (and I’ve learned to steer clear of anything, oh, so vaguely resembling broccoli).
