Owner’s Perspective
A few days ago, I did the unthinkable… I gave Max his treat while he was still playing with his favorite red ball. Yeah, I know. I hadn’t realized what a grievous mistake it was until I saw the look of shock sweep across Max’s face.
You see, in Max’s world, there’s a sacred order to things. There’s Playtime, which involves the red ball, the squeaky toy, and the tug rope – not necessarily in that order, but never, and I mean NEVER combined with Treat Time. And oh, speaking of Treat Time, they’re freeze-dried delights, Primal Pet Foods–his absolute favorite.
So, the moment I dropped that treat in front of him while his bright red ball was still in play, his tail stopped mid-wag. The ball tumbled from his mouth, and Max just stared at me. Disappointed dog eyes bore into me, his ears flat against his head in utter bewilderment. Then, with a deep sigh that echoed his heartbreaking disappointment, he dropped his head on his paws and fell into a mournful slumber.
And that’s the story of how I ended up blubbering apologies to my dog, who’s heart I’d broken by merging his sacred, separate times of Play and Treat.
Max’s Side of Things
I was having the BEST DAY. The red ball was OUT. I was doing my best moves, twisting my body in mid-air, catching the ball on the bounce with perfect precision. It was PURE JOY. And then… the UNTHINKABLE HAPPENED.
In SHE comes. Holding MY PRIMAL TREAT. Now, don’t get me wrong. I LOVE TREAT TIME. But NEVER, EVER during PLAYTIME. They are DISTINCT, SEPARATE times to be enjoyed in FULL, not MIXED. It was as if she BROKE THE UNIVERSE. I CANNOT stress the SERIOUSNESS of this situation.
And then, she just DROPPED THE TREAT. Just like that. With NO WARNING. The ball tumbled out of my mouth–my world SHATTERED. My tail stopped wagging. My heart stopped playing its joyful rhythm. I felt BETRAYED.
I just had to sleep off the shock. There was no other way to handle this.
How Peace Was Restored
After a full day of silent treatment from Max, I couldn’t take it any longer. His sad eyes, his refusal to wag his tail, his melodramatic sighs were too much. I realized I had to fix this. So, I did what any guilt-ridden dog owner would do, I picked up my phone and dialed The Hungry Puppy.
One quick order later, and I had an express home delivery scheduled–a new bag of Primal freeze-dried dog food was on its way. I also ordered a new squeaky toy. Max didn’t know it yet, but his separate times of Play and Treat were about to be set right.
When the delivery arrived, Max’s tail started to swing slowly. I held up the packet of Primal’s delicious nuggets and his eyes wrinkled in curiosity. Treat Time was here, and there were no signs of the red ball. I could see his tail start to wag faster. Then I unveiled the new squeaky toy – fresh from the packet, smelling like brand new. Play Time!
A few minutes later, Max was munching on his favorite Primal treat with the squeaky toy resting against his paw, happy sighs echoing in the room. Yes, all was well in Max’s world again.
Crisis averted. World set back to rights. Dog no longer hates me (until I dare to play fetch during dinner time).
