Owner’s Side of the Story
I’ll admit it. I forgot Buster’s playdate with his best friend, Spot. Now, before you judge me, let me explain. Between juggling work deadlines, last-minute errands, and the chaos of everyday life, somehow, “dog playdate at 4 PM” slipped my mind. (For all the organization apps out there, none seem to have a dedicated reminder for a dog’s social life!)
You know how blissful a dog park can be, right? Dogs running with enthusiasm that only those four-legged balls of fur can display. Now imagine stripping that bliss out of Buster’s day, unintentionally, of course. When 4 PM rolled by, and Buster was not in the park meeting his best friend, Spot, he looked at me. Looked at the clock. Sighed and laid down.
Oh, that sigh. That heart-wrenching, soul-deep sigh of disappointment only my Labrador Buster can master perfectly. The ‘you forgot my playdate and broke my heart’ kind of sigh. That’s when it hit me. I had committed the unforgivable. No steak dinner could make up for this—his day was ruined, and I was the villain.
Buster’s Banter
I had my BALL ready. I had been dreaming the whole day: the green grass, the endless running, and of course, SPOT. We were supposed to bond today, chase each other, claim our victory over that coveted tennis ball.
I waited patiently. I looked at her, glanced at the clock, dropped my ball at her feet. I thought she got it; they call it communication, right?
But NO. Nothing happened. She continued doing that endless typing thing they call work. No car keys, no leash, no ride to the best place on Earth.
EXCUSE ME? Is making those small green papers really more important than my social life, my joy, MY FRIEND SPOT? The betrayal, I felt it deeper than any buried bone.
Happy Ending
Realizing my sin—the sad eyes, that deep sigh of despair—I couldn’t stand it. I closed my laptop, grabbed my keys, and called The Hungry Puppy. I owed Buster a grand apology, and only The Hungry Puppy’s Dog Park could offer the redemption I needed. I reserved a spot for Buster and Spot to enjoy the park exclusively.
When I jingled the car keys, Buster radiated excitement but held back, still nursing his wounded pride. It wasn’t until we pulled into The Hungry Puppy’s Dog Park and he saw Spot waiting for him, eager to play, that Buster’s tail began that familiar, joyful wagging.
He bounded out of the car, barking happily, his eyes lit with joy. Watching him chase Spot around the park, wrestling for a tennis ball, filled the day with the laughter that had been missing. Watching my dog happy, I knew I was forgiven.
Crisis averted. Playdate salvaged. Dog no longer hates me (unless I miss the next playdate, but I’ve already set reminders).
