The Owner’s Side

When Charlie’s birthday came around, I was admittedly more preoccupied with a million other things on my checklist. Play date for my kids, grocery shopping, that important project at work. I didn’t forget completely — I knew it was his birthday. I just…didn’t do what we usually do. You know, making him his special “dog-friendly” birthday cake, serenading him with that slightly off-key rendition of “Happy Birthday”, the whole shebang.

This particular morning, I was in a rush. I wished Charlie a brisk “Happy Birthday!”, gave him a pat and a treat (fine, three treats) as I rushed out the door. I figured he wouldn’t really understand the difference, right? Imagine my surprise when I came home to the loudest silence I’ve ever heard — no excited tail thumping, no joyful panting, just Charlie quietly sitting there, ears flat, eyes wide with indignation.

As I walked in, he looked away from me, his unstated accusation hanging heavy in the house. Could he really be this upset about skipping the birthday song? At that moment, the weight of my betrayal sunk in (silently underscored by the disappointed wag of Charlie’s tail). I needed to fix this quickly.

Charlie Tells the Real Story

Today is my BIRTHDAY. The BEST day. The day of CAKE and SONGS and extra TREATS. I’ve been doing my very best “sits” since early morning. How could she not remember?

I thought we were going through the routine — you know, the slightly off-key singing, the begging for more cake (which always works!). My tail was READY TO WAG. I was filled to the brim with ANTS IN MY PANTS excitement.

But when she breezed past me with a hurried “Happy Birthday!” and a quickly tossed treat, my heart SANK. She left, leaving me staring at the closed door in utter DISBELIEF. Where was my song? Where was the cake? WHERE WAS MY SPECIAL DAY?

Through the day, I lay in my bed — my bed of BETRAYAL, disillusioned with the world. My humans are FICKLE creatures. One year they’re singing songs, the next year—NOTHING. Just complete, ABSOLUTE silence. My once trustful tail lay still. The world was turned upside down. The couch, my favorite lounge spot, looked less inviting, the treats lacked flavor, the betrayal hung in the air, heavy and dispiriting.

The Hungry Puppy Saves the Day

As Charlie gave me the silent treatment, I was struck with the full understanding of what I’d done. I couldn’t bear it any longer. “Alright, buddy,” I said, grabbing my keys. “Let’s fix this.”

Charlie forgave me, pressing his furry body against my legs in a loving lean. His tail thumping against the floor was the happiest sound I’d heard all day.

Crisis averted. Birthday saved. Dog no longer hates me (although I may need to set a few reminders in the future).
