My Dog Really Hates Me Because…

… The T-Shirt Trauma: When Love Turns into a Costume Parade

The Owner’s Side

It was a simple, well-intentioned idea: ‘The Martinez Family Reunion, Matching Custom T-Shirts Edition!’ seemed like a fun twist to our yearly gathering (and you know how we all adore coordinated group photos). But, as I looked into Bella’s doggy eyes, I realized my innocent idea of fun had become her canine catastrophe. Picking up Bella’s mini-version of the reunion shirt, I couldn’t help suppressing my chuckle. Tiny, plaid, and emblazoned with “Party Animal” in fluorescent lettering, it was the perfect bit of embellishment to cement Bella as a Martinez on this special day.

But the moment I began fitting the t-shirt over her little head and maneuvering her legs through the tiny sleeves, I sensed the disdain. The ear-pull. The tail tuck. The long, side-eye look that questioned ‘why, human, why?’ (She’s never mastered the art of hiding her feelings.)

As our family reunion progressed, so did Bella’s look of betrayal. She retreated to her bed, dramatically sighing every five minutes or so, as if reminding everyone of her embarrassment. Like a furry martyr wearing her comedic cross, Bella resorted to the canine version of silent protest. And boy, did it sting.

Bella Barks Back

I was JUST taking my afternoon NAP. Blissfully DREAMING of chasing squirrels and munching on gourmet biscotti treats from The Hungry Puppy. Then, I wake up to THIS. A T-SHIRT. On ME!

Do I look like a FASHION MODEL to you? Do I even wear CLOTHES normally? NO. I am a DOG! I wear my lovely fur coat proudly — NO additions needed. But no, she thought it would be ‘cute’ to put me in this ridiculous square-pattern shirt.

EXCUSE ME? How would SHE feel if I unearthed that horrendous Christmas themed sweater from last year and forced it upon her? Wouldn’t that be ‘cute’ too?!

And like that, my dream of biscuits was rudely replaced with glaring reality. A plaid nightmare. But I took it like a champ. YES, I SULKED. But I WORE the evil t-shirt of TORMENT. Why, you ask? Because I refuse to be seen as a SPOILSPORT at family fun. Plus, you know… the treat jar was looking rather full today.

The Happy Ending

By afternoon, I realized that Bella’s protest was stronger than my desire for matching family photos. I couldn’t bear to see her look so miserable.

“This isn’t right,” I muttered to myself, sliding off my chair. Stepping away from our barbeque, I headed towards Bella’s doggy bag — our emergency lifeboat stored away for just such occasions.

Thankfully, I had recently bought a new stack of her favorite treats from The Hungry Puppy — bacon and cheese flavored chewy bones. Detailed with ribbons of real bacon packed into the center of every bone. Opening a pack, I went over to Bella, now laying dramatically on her bed.

The moment Bella smelt the aroma wafting through the air, I could see her ears perk up. She turned to look at me, eyes hopeful and pleading. That’s when I released her from her cotton prison and rewarded her bravery with the delectable treat.

With a wag in her tail and contentment in her eyes, Bella accepted my peace offering. She munched on her chewy bone, making these tiny sighs of happiness. There was even a grateful nudge from her against my leg.

Crisis averted. Dignity restored (albeit temporarily). Dog no longer hates me (just our family reunion T-shirt tradition).
