Owner’s Perspective
I recently discovered that my sweet Cuddles is quite the green thumb (Okay, fine — paw). It all started when we moved into a new house with a beautiful garden. Cuddles fell in love instantly. We’d spend hours outdoors, enjoying the sun and watching the bees flit from flower to flower. We had new bonding activities: I’d prune the roses while she dug little moats around them. (You know the ones — those oddly perfect circles that make me wonder if the dog is smarter than me.)
So seeing her take such interest, I thought, why not grow a small patch of her favorite vegetables? A wonderful idea, right? Just the picture of a happy suburban life. I was positively aglow with garden-themed daydreams.
Of course, until Cuddles started munching on a carrot that wasn’t quite ready for picking yet. I mean, it hardly qualified as a carrot stick. And those sad, confused eyes when the veggie snapped out of the ground, so far from the crunchy delight she was expecting? It was like watching someone find out puppies grow up.
Cuddles Comments
I LOVE the garden. There are things to SMELL and things to CHASE and, most importantly—things to JUDGE. Have you ever noticed how confidently a flower blooms? It’s like they know they’re winning at life. I aspire for that kind of audacity.
So, there I was, sniffing the sweet scent of roses, patrolling for pesky squirrels, when I saw it. A small patch of fresh dirt and delicate little plants. MY OWNER was staring at them with a joy that should ONLY be reserved for me. EXCUSE ME? But upon closer inspection, I realized these weren’t just plants. They were vegetables! Carrots AND tomatoes. My nose twitched with anticipation. My tail wagged a dance of joy.
Then came the UNTHINKABLE. Just as I nibbled at a luscious, crunchy carrot stick, it SNAPPED. Ripped right out of the ground, its roots bare. Instead of crunch, it was soft and tasteless! How DARE it!
I let out the most melodic of growls (not being dramatic, it was a masterpiece), and walked away. A dog can only take so much discontent before she needs to pout dramatically and sigh loudly every five seconds so everyone knows she is suffering.
How Peace Was Restored
The guilt. The disappointment in her eyes. It was too much. I realized my mistake, got in my car, and drove straight to The Hungry Puppy. They understand the sacred bond between a dog and her treats.
Finding the Primal Freeze-Dried Carrots was a relief. They were nutritious and had the satisfying crunch that Cuddles expected. I bought a few packs, promising myself that I’d wait for the vegetables in our garden to fully grow before letting Cuddles near them again.
When we got home, I opened a pack and offered a piece to Cuddles. She was skeptical at first, as any smart dog would be. But the moment she took a tentative bite, her whole demeanor changed. The wagging tail, the soft whine of happiness, the eager jumps for more. She forgave me, and all was right in the world again.
Crisis averted. Vegetable-induced betrayal remedied. Dog no longer hates me (but we are taking some baby steps with the other vegetables).
