Owner’s Perspective

Something had to be done. Have you ever looked at your pooch and thought, “Wow, the fuzz has taken over”? That was me with Max. His mop of fur was akin to that trendy boho-chic hairstyle, except without the “chic”.

Now, I’m no fur stylist, but Max had it all: a wonderfully majestic mane of rogue tufts, hair sprouting in all directions. You should have seen him — the wind in his hair, the little fuzzball lapping it up. Each time I saw him shuffling around, I thought… “Maybe it’s time.”

Bear in mind that I meant well. But when I picked up those clippers, you could see the uncertainty clouding Max’s eyes. I went in gently, shearing him down to a shorter, more manageable coat. It wasn’t a stylish cut; some might charitably call it a DIY-fuzz-shortage. But my intentions were golden.

Max’s initial reaction? He looked down at his shorn self and froze. Tail still, ears flat against his head, he gazed at me, then at his fallen hair, then back at me. His eyes screamed a wordless, “Why?” Leaving me fixated on my confused, shivering, newly shorn dog.

Max’s Melodrama

Let’s talk about respect. First and foremost, I take pride in my hair. It’s my glorious coat, my warmth, and my pride and joy. And SHE decided that DIY fur styling was a thing? Have mercy!

I saw her eyeing my free-flowing fur — had the look of a woman possessed by a plan. I thought it was just one of those human thoughts which would fizzle out soon. Then I saw the clippers. Dear Dogfather, I saw the clippers. Was it not my soft tufts that she had lovingly stroked as she watched her humanly TV shows?

Then came the snip, swift and disrespectfully immediate. I barely had time to protest. She STOLE my fuzz. Snip. Snip. Snip. Unceremoniously, my beautiful fluffy dreams fell to the ground, leaving me feeling ever so… nude.

Outraged? Yes. Disappointed? Painfully so. I looked up at her with what she calls my ‘puppy eyes’, but what I call my ‘You’ve under-estimated the value of my fluff’ eyes. This was the great haircut horror. The scandal of the year.

The Happy Ending

Guilt. It slaps you hard, especially when you see your little floofer shivering sans his beloved fur coat. It was time to fix this.

And so, Max was introduced to his very first sweater experience. With hesitant tail wagging, he inspected it, then gingerly stepped his front paws into it, seemingly fascinated by this new covering. His tush followed, and voila – Max was clothed.

He looked at me, cocking his head to one side, before bursting into a flurry of tail wags. He looked at himself then me, a sort of understanding blooming between us. Haircuts could happen, but so could the joy of warm, cozy sweaters.

Crisis averted. Max is a sweater pup now. Dog no longer hates me (until he outgrows this one, that is).
